Columbus Celebrates Its Passion for Fashion

Paris, Milan, New York, LA…Columbus, Ohio? Yes, Columbus is the 3rd largest city for fashion design in the nation, just after NYC and LA, and is a leader in new, innovative fashion design. What better way to celebrate all of the talented, up and coming designers— host a fashion week!

“Fashion Week Columbus is a great event for emerging fashion designers and for the city of Columbus. Art makes Columbus, and I’m honored to be a part of this event that helps developing artists succeed,” says Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther. Founded in 2010, FWC is a non-profit organization that serves as a platform to showcase local and emerging fashion designers, while also providing scholarships to fashion design students.

“I was honored and thankful to receive the Fashion Week Columbus 2015 scholarship,” says Lauren Metelitz. “Not only did this scholarship help immensely towards my school costs, but also with my career. It allowed me to go above and beyond with my senior collection, thus adding a wonderful piece to my portfolio.”

Throughout the year, FWC and its sponsors host many events to draw attention to the talent that will be featured during Fashion Week. It is always exciting to see who are chosen as the headliners for various genres of fashion. “Fashion Week Columbus 2016 is sure to be an exciting week showcasing couture gowns worn by celebrities, top local fashion designers and our headline designer, Adolfo Sanchez,” says Thomas McClure, founder and executive director of Fashion Week Columbus. “We’re excited to be bringing Columbus fashion to the spotlight, both here and across the nation!”

Born and raised in Southern California, Adolfo Sanchez has been interested in fashion since the age of 19. He gained experience in the industry by working for Versace and later Gucci, and then by 2006 he was ready to launch his own label with a ready-to-wear collection. His career has exploded, and his well-known brand allows him to work with celebrities in the US and Latin communities. In 2011, his collections became available to consumers in many upscale boutiques. “I am excited to show pieces from my latest collection, ‘The New Hollywood’ in Columbus,” says Adolfo Sanchez. His collections feature eveningwear, fur-trimmed outerwear and women’s shoes.

FashIon FWC runs from October 8-15 and showcases children’s fashion, wedding designers, and high-fashion clothing for men and women ranging from swimsuits to evening wear. “For the second year, one of our most innovative happenings is our buyers and press event,” comments Michelle Moore, FWC marketing committee co-chair. “FWC teamed up with IL Moda PR, a local brand development consultancy for fashion and accessory designers.” Emerging designers are schooled on fabric and sewing, but they don’t often learn the business of fashion. During FWC, all the designers participating in the wedding and finale runway shows are given an opportunity to work with IL Moda PR to help develop their brands and prepare to go to market through business coaching, product sourcing, PR, design, trend forecasting and retail outreach. Wholesale and department store buyers come to meet the designers to shop their lines and give feedback.

This program has provided opportunities for designers that could take years to achieve. Some of the alumni have gone on to be featured in New York Fashion Week, China’s Guangdong Fashion Week, red carpet events, Couture Fashion Bridal Week in NYC, and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Alumni have also had numerous retail opportunities in high-end department stores, boutiques and through their own online businesses with some being featured in media outlets like USA Today, the Huffington Post, NBC, Fox, Hola TV Show and Strut on Oxygen. This fashion week has proven to be one of the leaders in the fashion industry.

For those who enjoy fashion—creating it, dreaming about it, or just loving the passion it brings—FWC is a must-see event. It will provide an immersive experience in fashion and culture for all who attend, and is a wonderful opportunity to discover the new and exciting innovations that the city’s designers have to offer. For those whose hearts belong on 5th Avenue, Fashion Week Columbus brings it home. Columbus Celebrates Its
