In its purest form, the word adoption means “taking something on as your own.” It comes from the Old French word adoptare meaning “to choose for oneself.” For many, adoption can mean a host of different things and can carry a myriad of feelings. For those who are seeking to grow their families, adoption and/or fostering a child is an emotional journey unlike any other, and as many will attest, it is worth the time and effort.
Adopting a child into a “forever family” has evolved from the time when resources and options were little to none, and those wishing to bring a child into their homes faced a journey fraught with closed doors, immense financial commitment and a lot of political red tape. With the foster and adoption process, there is still much more work to be done, and more families are needed to give many more children a “forever family.”
