During my early years growing up in Louisville, KY, I found bourbon a common sight on billboards, in ads and at events where adults enjoyed cocktails like the Manhattan and the Old Fashioned (which was invented in Louisville). Because of its rich vanilla notes, my family used bourbon to flavor fruitcakes, homemade ice cream and eggnog. But bourbon began a downhill slide in popularity after its heyday in the 50s and 60s.
