Shop Local Spotlights

local-spotlight-cover

Why should we shop at independent, locally owned businesses? Studies show that when you shop at locally owned businesses, those businesses purchase from other local businesses — further strengthening the economic base of the whole community.  More money stays in the local economy.

Local business owners know you and you know them. It is important for them to nurture the community.  Local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of many big chains. When you shop local you are helping to create more jobs in your community.

Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded on. Nurturing local business ensures that the community stays strong.

Meyers Jewelers

Owners-Jeff-Scott

How did your company get started?
A lifelong resident of Columbus, Meyer started working for a local downtown jeweler in 1942. He was only 15 years old, but he got a job to help his family just after the Great Depression. When he was 17, he volunteered and joined the Navy to represent the USA in World War II. He spent two years in the military and then went back home to Columbus, Ohio, and back to work at the same jeweler he had worked for before the war. Twenty years later, Meyer decided to open up his own store in the Great Southern Shopping Center on the south side of Columbus, and that was the start of Meyers Jewelers.

Jeff started working in the store in 1973 at the age of 13. He went on to college at The Ohio State University and graduated in 1982. After graduation, he began working full-time. Six years later, his brother Scott followed his path and graduated from The Ohio State University before joining the family business, where he still works today. For both of them, Meyers Jewelers is more than just a job — it has been a large part of their family.

What makes your company unique?

Pathway Tables

Noah-Lucas-Head-Carpenter

How did your company get started?
Founder John Joseph started the company in 2014 as a hobby. He, along with head carpenter Noah Lucas, sourced the wood from John’s property, learned how to run a sawmill, built a kiln and made tables from the dried wood slabs. John and Noah started out making coffee tables and dining tables, and they were inspired by the incredible beauty that they found when they cut into old, ugly logs.

They wanted to share the beauty of live edge furniture with everyone, so they decided to turn their hobby into a business. In 2017, after selling tables at trade shows for a few years, the company had received such incredible feedback from customers that they decided to open a Columbus showroom. In early 2018, the doors to the showroom in Lewis Center were opened for business, managed by John’s daughter Sarah Hutson. Customers are now able to visit the showroom and see the beautiful and unique tables in person.

What makes your company unique?
Each table is a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted work of art. We are bringing the beauty of nature into your home and providing a beautiful place to gather your families and loved ones.

The base of each table is also custom made. Customers have the ability to choose from a variety of unique options, finishes and base heights. Additionally, we offer unique options like adding colored epoxy or glass.

Customers have the option to visit our woodshop and pick out their slabs in person, much like selecting a slab of granite.

What brands and products does your company offer?
We offer dining tables, coffee tables, end tables, console tables, conference tables, desks, countertops and headboards.

What would you tell a potential customer?
Our tables are handcrafted, solid wood that will stand the test of time and will be passed down for generations. They are truly worth the investment! We stand behind the quality of our tables and take pride in our work. We care about our customers and want to work with them to design and create a table that they will love.

COOL FACTS:

  • It takes years to acquire, mill and kiln dry enough slabs to have a solid inventory for customers to choose from. It could be up to 2 years before a slab is ready to be finished into a table.
  • Our tables are only made from locally-sourced Ohio trees.
  • We have thousands of slabs available, all currently in different stages of drying.
