Atlas Butler
How did your company get started?
Atlas Butler is a family-owned company that can trace its roots back to The Ramey Mfg. Co. In 1921, Ramey purchased the manufacturing rights to the Butler Furnace from the F.B. Zeig Mfg. Co. and the “Butler Furnace Company” was born. In 1934, the name Atlas Butler was adopted to emphasize the concept of “Strength Through Service.” The company is currently owned and operated by the third and fourth generations of the Swepston family.
What products or services do you specialize in?
Atlas Butler specializes in the repair, maintenance, and installation of heating and cooling equipment as well as plumbing and drain services. The plumbing and drain services side of the business is newer; however, you can expect the same Atlas Butler knowledge and expertise. We work on all brands of furnaces, air conditioners, and water heaters. Our technicians are also experts in Clean Air Products and Services, such as Duct Cleaning, which can help improve the air quality in your home and keep your family healthy and comfortable.
What makes your company unique?
Our Same Day Comfort Pledge set us apart in the HVAC category. If your furnace or air conditioner isn’t working, Atlas Butler pledges to have you up and running the day you call. More than 95% of the time we can repair or replace your system the same day without any after-hours or overtime service fees.
Atlas Butler also promises our Two-Hour Service Window Guarantee for HVAC and plumbing calls. We’ll give you a two-hour window for your appointment. If our technicians are one minute late or miss your scheduled service time, the service fee is waived.
Most importantly, our employees are family to us and it is our priority to treat them as such.
What would you like homeowners to know?
It is our mission to serve others with honest solutions for our customers’ needs and to be creative, work smart, and have fun.
Cool Facts:
In the early 1990s, we replaced one of the last known Butler furnaces, which had been installed in 1928 in Whitehall, Ohio. That’s 62 years—talk about quality!
Atlas Butler has always supported education in our industry. Second generation owner, Dwight Swepston, was instrumental in helping to develop a career education program with the local HVAC association, in conjunction with the Columbus Public Schools. In fact, one of our employees who went through that very program celebrated his 50th anniversary with Atlas Butler in 2019.
In 2021, Atlas Butler will be celebrating their 100th anniversary!

The company grew rapidly, and it expanded into structural repair and mold remediation, in addition to basement waterproofing. In 1999, Ron was on a road trip and saw a billboard for The House Doctor. He thought to himself, “That’s what we do; we fix basements just like a doctor.” He then became known as “The Basement Doctor,” and soon after, the company officially changed its name to The Basement Doctor.
